Five signs it's time to start preparing your exit

Most owners start planning their exit too late. Here are five signals that it's time to begin preparing your business for a sale.

Most business owners wait until they are ready to walk away before they think about selling. By then, many of the levers that drive value have already been left on the table. The best exits are planned two to three years in advance.

1. You're working in the business, not on it

If every key decision still runs through you, buyers will see risk. Building a team that can operate without you is one of the most valuable things you can do before a sale.

2. Growth has plateaued

Buyers pay for momentum. If revenue has flattened, it may be time to either invest in a new growth push or bring in an owner who will.

3. Your industry is consolidating

When strategic buyers and private equity are active in your space, valuations tend to rise. Timing your exit with market demand can make a meaningful difference.

4. Your personal goals have changed

Retirement, health, family, or simply a new chapter — personal readiness matters just as much as business readiness.

5. You don't know what your business is worth

A professional valuation gives you a clear baseline and a roadmap for closing any value gaps before you go to market.
